This is a Running Blog

This is a running blog.

Oh, you say you forgot that? My bad! So somewhere along the line lately my running mojo escaped me and I sort of stopped talking about running all together. No good. I love that with this is a blog I can share my adventures, food finds, and endeavors with you but ultimately my goal when I created this was to talk about running. So today that’s what I’m going to do. I’m bringing it back old school!

I’m happy to say I’m running again! Yesterday I put in three miles and felt awesome. No pain in the ol IT Band either (and I didn’t wear my IT Band strap), which I’m tentatively excited about. I don’t want to say that its completely healed because I haven’t pushed it yet past 3 miles but its looking better than a few months ago. Just to update, I’m still going to PT but pulled it back to once a week only because I’m limited with time because of fieldwork. I think its made a huge difference for my injury, between the ART therapy, ASTYM and the strength exercises.

Example of ASTYM, that’s not my actual leg

And because of PT (and this IT Band injury), I realized how important cross-training is for runners. It HAS to be incorporated into any training plan I ever use and I can’t slack on it because I think its part of what put me in this position in the first place. So just a PSA for all runners: make sure you include strength training and cross-training into your plans!

So now that I’m running again and am starting to get my mojo back, barring any IT Band flare-ups, I have some races planned for the fall and winter and I’m going to just put them out there now so I’m accountable:

Sept – NYRR Bronx 10 miler

Sept – Fitness Mag Mind, Body and Spirit 4m

Oct- RTB Relay New Jersey

Reach the Beach Relay

There will be other NYRR races at the end of the year too, but registration isn’t open yet for them. I am going to complete my 9+1 by the end of the year for the 2013 NYC Marathon (ah!) so I’ll have a few more to run.

Then for next year I’m planning on running Disney for my big winter half marathon: the Disney Princess Half Marathon. I’ve always wanted to run the Disney races and my sister may train with me for this one (hello motivation!). Also, a bunch of Sweat Pink Ambassadors and other bloggers may be there, so it should be a ton of fun.

I want to be like this girl running with Aladdin…

Once I officially sign up for this one, I’ll let you know. Just thinking about running in Disney world is insanely motivating for me since I’m a huge Disney addict so I’m sure it will happen. Anyone else planning on running this?

Its good to be talking about running again. I am getting my motivation back, have race plans, and am getting my official training plan together. It will probably include 4-5 days a week of running depending on my own schedule and what I can handle. Just listing out all these races is getting my excited too! I love biking and other forms of fitness, but for me running is it. Its my passion. And I’m happy to be getting back into it!

What races are you planning on running this year/next year?
Have you ever had an injury that set you back?
Do you include enough strength training/crosstraining into your training plans?

  1. Hooray! I am so glad that your IT Band is letting you get back at it!

  2. Hurray! Glad you’re feeling better and running again.

  3. We should do the Disney Half together!! A friend wanted me to do it this year, but I’m being realistic and planning to train other ways and then really get in to it next year.

  4. I wanna run the Bronx 10 miler, too! I feel like it will be a perfect training run before our relay! Have you signed up yet?

  5. Yay for your IT band behaving! Happy you’re able to be running again. :)

  6. Don’t have any races scheduled yet but have a long list of ones I narrowed down to pick through! I agree that cross/strength training is important to running (and health in general). I don’t do nearly enough of it. I do have some cross training scheduled into my current training planning at least. I really need to get into strength training and not be afraid of weights!

Glad to hear the IT Band is being good and you’ve gotten to 3 miles with no problems!

    • Awesome! Any good races that you are really excited for? I didn’t do enough crosstraining either but I won’t make that mistake again, this injury taught me a big lesson haha. Glad you have some crosstraining/strength training in your schedule, its worth it!

  7. Glad you’re back to running and the injury is getting better! I’m running the Disney Princess half! I’ve ran it the past two years…it’s sooo much fun!!!

  8. Glad to see you back! Hopefully I can do the same soon too!

  9. Doesn’t it feel so good to be hitting the pavement again? I’m doing a Disneyland race this January. My first – which is ridiculous since I live 20 minutes away.

  10. It’s crazy that I haven’t had the desire to race at. all. this year. I usually run about 10 races a year – I think I raced myself out!

  11. I would LOVE to do a Disney race – but I swear my 2013 is already booked out – craziness. Let’s meet up at the 10-miler! I need a buddy :)

  12. YAY so glad to hear that you are back on the road!!

  13. yay! congrats on getting back on the running game…mine has been slacking, but have been getting more miles in on the bike. you win some, you lose some? haha! cross training is sooo important and sometimes i don’t feel like doing it..but it’s a must to stay injury free!

  14. I really should sign up to run a NYRR race, I’m sure Mike wouldn’t mind!

I can’t wait for RTB, hopefully we get our teammate situation taken care of but I’m not too worried yet.

I have a bunch of races for the rest of the summer/fall and I know that there will be a few more too!

I ran the Disney Princess 1/2 this past year and I have to tell you, Disney knows how to give you a good time! My friend and I will be back for the Princess 1/2 next year as well!!

  16. Glad your up and running again!
As a fitness instructor I get in plenty of strength/cross training in my schedule.
As for race schedule. I hope you enjoy running in at Disney. I am running the 2013 Goofy Challenge i January.
I am also running the Air Force Marathon, The Army Ten Miler, and the Marine Corp Marathon all this fall.
