The blog is BACK & lots of updates

Did you miss me?! I know, I know.. I’ve been a bad blogger. But there’s a GOOD reason for it. It’s official, Run Like a Grl is now self-hosted (looong over-due). Of course, I am pathetic with technology so I had lots and lots of help from the lovely Becca (who I get to meet next week at the Nike Half!). Because of the transfer, I couldn’t post until it was complete. Hence, the blog silence.

I am trying to get all my subscribers transferred over from my old page, but just in case, you can always go to the sidebar and re-follow my blog so you get my posts by email. OR you can follow through bloglovin‘. Thanks, loves!

Now for all the updates. So what exactly have I been doing in the past two weeks? Well, here’s the short version:

1. I cried, wore my race shirt, and ran for Boston. The events in Boston upset me more than I can put into words and I have been struggling to recover, despite not even being there. But I had friends there. Other runners were there. And when you attack one of us, you attack us all. I will be running in blue and yellow this weekend in the memory of those affected, and hope many others runners do the same.

2. I started my new job! This is the third week of my new job, and first one as a licensed occupational therapist. I am absolutely loving it so far and am happy to be treating patients again after time off to take my exam.

3. I went hiking at Bear Mountain in upstate NY. Karl and I took a day trip to Bear Mountain and went on a really challenging trail to test out our Merrell hiking shoes.

First, the shoes are AMAZING (mine have Vibram soles). Second, it was an amazing workout I was seriously sweating even though it was a chilly day. Plus, its fun and I didn’t fall once. Score!

4. I will be teaming up with Reebok to run the Spartan Race on June 2nd in Tuxedo, NY with a group of awesome Fitfluential Ambassadors. I am so lucky to be able to do this and recently got a bunch of awesome gear from Reebok. I’ll be sharing them with you, but this weekend I tried out the Reebok Sublite Duo shoes and loved them! I only did some walking in them, but they have a roomy toe-box and good support. Oh and the color is an obvious love of mine..

The Sublite Duo is made of a lightweight, dual-density foam technology which allows it to be super light but also supportive. As someone who gets occasional plantar faciitis and ITBS, I need some arch support in my shoes and these feel great in terms of that. I also like that the midsole has a softer density directly under the call of the foot. They also don’t need any breaking in which = love.

5. I signed up for the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge 3.5 mile race in June with my new company. I have always wanted to run this race so I signed up as soon as I found out I could. Can’t wait to run with my new coworkers!

6. I went to Smorgasborg in DUMBO, Brooklyn and enjoyed lots of delicious schnitzel and large donuts from Dough.

7. I’ve been running a lot, and feeling pretty good while doing it. Most recently I ran my last long run before the half at 10 miles across the bridges and the West Side. I’ll admit I have some lingering pain below my knee but I’m still hoping it goes away with more strength training. Its not awful though, so crossing my fingers it just disappears and I never have to worry about it again. Hey, it could happen!

8. I ate free Pinkberry every Wednesday this month. Pinkberry had a promotion this month for their new Greek frozen yogurt and has been giving away free cups every Wednesday in April between 11am-2pm. So needless to say I got on line early to get my froyo on.

9. I got lots of goodies from the amazing people at Vega and got to try out some amazing products from their Sport Edition. I especially love the cookie dough protein bar.. its de-licious and full of protein for post-run. If you haven’t check out the free Thrive Forward Sport Edition program (especially all you health-conscious runners out there) for lots of tips and recipes!

10. I’ll be running a half marathon on Sunday. Anyone else running the Nike DC Half?!

Three Things Thursday

I’ve been slacking in the Three Things Thursday department! Whoops. But today I am feeling good, am back to being a normal human, and my anxiety is finally at a low, which brings me to my first “thing”…

Thursday

1. I AM OFFICIALLY AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST! Whew, this is my biggest news maybe ever. After a lifetime of schooling and months of studying for my licensing exam, I found out this morning that I passed and am officially an OT! I’ve been waiting for over 2 weeks for the results and could barely sleep last night in anticipation, so I woke up super early to check my results online. To relax myself I have been baking excessively (as you will be able to tell later on in this post) and offsetting the calories by working out/running. Luckily this morning it was GREAT news!

Even though my graduation ceremony was last summer, passing this exam actually marks the completion of everything I’ve worked towards. Today I am the happiest girl in the world and can’t wait to celebrate. I love OT!

And now its official!

And now its official!

2. Last weekend I was lucky enough to attend an event hosted by Pilates Pro Works NYC and organized by my friend Kristine. I am already in love with this studio and go here often for TRX and Pilates Reformer classes so I was thrilled the event was happening here. They have GREAT instructors and the studio itself is big and beautiful. They also have great customer service and are super friendly.

The class we were all taking that day was a 30/30 class: 30 minutes of Pilates Reformer, 30 minutes of TRX Barre. I have taken the Reformer class in the past and this one did not disappoint, it was as good and fun as it was in my previous experiences. I really love the uniqueness of this class and using the Fit Former machine!

The TRX Barre portion was also very good, although my preference was to the Reformer. I typically take a regular TRX class at Pilates Pro Works that I love, so I think Barre may just not be for me in general. But it was still a really good workout and fun to try!

Kristine really went all out in planning this and had snacks and goodies for everyone at the end of the class. She also hosted two raffles: a PPW hoodie and a Nike Fuel Band. Everyone put their name in and to my surprise I won the Nike FuelBand! I was so excited and have been addicted to it ever since. Its fantastic! (full review to come when I use it more).

This event was also a great opportunity to meet in person some other bloggers and ladies who I’ve “met” via social media! They were all amazing and we had a great time at the class. Its times like these I remember how much blogging has changed my life and introduced me to so many great people!

Such a great time with these girls!

3. My last random thing is just to share some photos I took recently around the city. I went to Staten Island for a doctor’s appointment the other day (yes, my doctors are all still there) and was sitting on the ferry just looking out the window. I was such a nice day and one of those that I remembered how much I love NYC. Some days its super stressful and I want to do is get out of here, but then there are those times I remember how lucky I am.

Love this city.

Love this city.

I was taking the subway the other day too and saw tiling work from the old subway lines when they were under independent operators (like the Independent Subway System) rather than exclusively the MTA. It is fun to randomly run into things like this and stop quickly to think about the history.

Love seeing old signs like this.

Featured Chobaniac & Simple Healthy French Toast Sticks Recipe

Firstly, today’s post for you is not on this blog per se but was written by me! I am today’s Featured Chobaniac on the Chobani Greek Yogurt blog! I was lucky enough to be able to write a post for them about how to overcome an exercise rut, including tips and strategies. Ironically, I have been going through a rut lately (this cold weather makes it super hard to convince myself to get outside) so this post is reminding me of all the ways I can get myself back into the groove. CLICK HERE to go check it out :)

Really quickly I wanted to share a few random things with you today:

1. If you live in NYC or in the area nearby, or if you will be here in March, enter for a FREE race entry for the NYC All State 13.1 race from Ashley. Its worth a shot to enter, especially for people like me who didn’t get into the NYC Half.

2. A while back I was contacted by the wonderful people at Aspaeris Pivot Shorts and asked to test their new Gen2 shorts. This company has amazing customer service and was one of my RTB Relay sponsors. Since the new shorts were still in production at the time I was asked to try them, I couldn’t reveal anything to you… until now! Aspaeris has officially released their NEW and improved shorts, and they come in PINK! Yayy :)

pink

Some of the features of the new Gen2 shorts are:

  • Reinforced seams that will extend the life of the short.
  • Color block logo.
  • Newly designed crotch & comfort waistband.
  • Adjustability of the dual layers at the leg opening**

The new dual layers makes is so much easier to put these on, and the layers even out instead of the old ones that I had to pull at the inner layer. They really improved the shorts in this new model (if thats possible, they were great to begin with!) and I highly recommend them.

Use the code FREESHIP for free shipping. Code expires in about 5 days or so.

3. I HAVE been running, believe it or not. I just started my training plan for the NWM in DC in April and am, as usual, using the Hal Hidgon intermediate plan to guide me. Except I plan on only running 3x a week instead of 4x because my body starts to hate me when I make it run too often! And as much as I love Finishline PT, I don’t want to go back there just yet :)

I also have a super fun recipe for you today! So everyone who reads this blog has probably heard me talk about the Vega Thrive Forward program that has inspired me to focus on clean eating in 2013. Although I am not perfect (I did have some late night pizza the other day.. guilty!), like Kayla said in her guest post, its is about balance. PS. Kayla is also hosting a giveaway right now, check it out!

As a result, I made some simple, healthy french toast this morning with VERY few ingredients. So easy to make, tastes great, and won’t break your diet.

Simple Healthy French Toast Sticks
Makes one serving

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of day old whole wheat toast
  • Two egg whites
  • Splash of vanilla almond or soy milk
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tbsp coconut oil
  • Topping: Flavored jam, peanut butter and/or syrup

Directions:

  1. Heat coconut oil over cooking pain to medium-high heat. Meanwhile, in a bowl, combine the egg whites, milk, and salt and mix with a whisk or fork.
  2. Slice bread into “sticks” (3 per slice, 6 total) and dip into egg white mixture on both sides to coat entire surface area of bread.
  3. Place sticks into pan and heat on both sides until browned. Sprinkle with cinnamon while on the pan for flavor.
  4. Top french toast sticks with your choice of toppings.
  5. Enjoy!
