You Need Bad Runs to Appreciate the Good Runs

This Sunday I had a disastrous 6 mile training run. Actually, it didn’t end up being 6 miles like I had planned that’s how bad it was. I ended up going back to my apartment at 4.5 miles. While I won’t get into the details, it just didn’t seem right from the start. My breathing was off (stupid asthma), ice was all over the ground from Nemo, and everything just felt uncomfortable from my feet to my shoulders.

A bad training run hasn’t happened to me in a while so of course when I got back home, I was all sorts of upset. I didn’t get in the distance I needed to according to my Nike Women’s Half Marathon training plan, my foot was bothering me due to a blister, and just felt generally awful afterwards. I’ve been having issues with motivation to run lately to begin with so this 4.5 miler was just salt on the fire. Or so I thought.

When I got home I tweeted about my bad run and immediately got INSANE amounts of support from so many of my amazing followers. I cannot be more grateful for what blogging has brought me, and this was just a reminder of how many amazing people are out there. People who really want to see you succeed and will give you the motivation to do so.

TooOldToRun was one follower who sent me an amazing tweet telling me that we all need bad runs to appreciate the good ones. You can’t have one without the other. And I got to thinking about this and could not agree more. When I’ve had what I’d call a “good run”, I felt great and got in the distance I wanted to. But I also knew it they were good because I was able to compare it to those times when running was a struggle.

Thinking in these terms made me feel 100 times better and I decided to use this run as motivation to fuel my running fire. Today I went out and had a good 4 mile treadmill run, remembering all the support I had from so many great friends. The miles flew by for the first time in a while and I really had fun. Although Sunday’s run was emotional and upsetting, it was because of that run that I enjoyed today’s so much.

So… using this run and remembering the struggle I went through this weekend, I will have an amazing long run next weekend. Remember that you can and will overcome your struggles in running and in life and that every single thing happens for a reason.

This week I received an amazingly awesome little box from a company called Stride Box. There are lots of monthly subscription sample boxes out there but this one really impressed me with the great customer service and incredibly high quality products. Plus, it focuses on runners/athletes in particular which to me is amazing.

They read my mind.. I love getting cards!

February Stride Box!

This box is perfect for someone like me. I love to try new things and I’m incredibly indecisive. Seriously, I always have Karl make the final choice when we go out for dinner.. I can never do it! So in terms of my runner life, this box is a fantastic solution for me. It lets me try new things and makes the decision for me of a sample of items to try!

Here’s the breakdown:

Stride Box is a monthly subscription box geared towards runners by introducing them to established brands and also new up and coming ones. They do this by including items such as energy gels/bars, apparel, gadgets, and other items for only $15/month.

So what exactly comes in this box? Well, its different every month but for example here is what I got in the February Stride Box…

February Stride Box!

This is a motherload and I couldn’t believe how much was included when I opened it! It was like my birthday in February. There were gadgets including a waterbottle and lock shoelaces plus all sorts of food/fuel from companies like Hammer, Gu, Honey Stinger, MamzaBar, Skratch, and On-the-Go. So far I’m loving everything I’ve tried and have always wanted to try some of these items.

What I also love is that they include a reference list called the “Stride Guide” that lets you know what is in the box and gives discount codes so you know where to get more of the things you liked. A lot of companies forget this aspect so I’m happy its included. They will also open the “Stride Shop” soon where you can go directly to buy items!

If you are a runner, this would be a great subscription to try out and I was so happy with what was included.

Looking for My Mojo

Hey all! I am swamped with work and treatment plans for fieldwork so I’ll make this a short post. Actually, I really need your help. I seem to have lost my running mojo and need some help finding it!

Ever since my IT Band injury, which has resulted in months of PT and frustration, I haven’t felt like myself. After the Lake Placid Half on June 10 I took a few weeks off from running to try and let the band heal completely. So I started running again a week or so ago since my break but have only put in a few miles so far. I just don’t have the drive right now to get out there and run like I used to. I mean, I still love running but it seems that other things are getting in the way mentally and physically. Here are some of the main reasons/excuses I think I am creating in my head:

-Its hard to run outside because my asthma kicks in badly, plus I hate the heat
-I am mentally afraid of increasing mileage for fear of IT Band pain returning so I’m avoiding it subconsciously
-I don’t have enough time with fieldwork (horrible excuse)

Now, I think I may just have to force myself to do it for my mojo to come back on its own, but I wanted to see if anyone else has been through this and has any suggestions. I am going to be training soon and want to be in the right frame of mind when I start! HELP!! I want to be this girl again..

I need to find my strong, thanks Saucony…

PS. From my last post, looks like table 2 is the clear winner. So many people are into rustic (including me). I’ll let you know when we actually buy a coffee table, but now I’m leaning towards wood!
